The backpack is packed. The first-day photo is ready. And your child is about to walk into a school where they don't know the slang, the shows, the games, or the unwritten rules everyone else absorbed years ago.

For missionary kids — often called third culture kids — re-entry can be even harder than it is for their parents. Research shows many TCKs feel out of sync with peers well into their teens and twenties, and being “the different one” can quietly ache. They may look like they belong while feeling like foreigners inside. The good news, and it's real: these same kids are remarkably resilient, adaptable, and skilled at learning new worlds — because they've done it before.

Your kids are adjusting to a new world too — and they need your patience most of all.

You can smooth the landing. Find them a “cultural broker” — a slightly older kid or mentor who's made the same move and can explain the food, fashion, and slang. Keep a rhythm at home that honors both worlds, and let them grieve the friends and places they left. Watch for the quiet ones, not just the ones who act out. And remind them often that being different isn't the same as being less.
