You came home together. Why does it feel lonely?

#Marriage & Re-entry, #Reverse Culture Shock, #Family

You pictured this moment for years — both of you, finally home, together. So why does the house feel so quiet, and why do the two of you keep missing each other?

Here's something few couples are warned about: two people can step off the same plane and land in completely different places. One spouse throws themselves into unpacking, errands, and rebuilding, grateful to stay busy. The other moves slowly, still aching for the community and calling left behind. Same house. Two very different homecomings.

This isn't a sign the marriage is failing. Re-entry specialists note that even the steadiest marriages get strained by cross-cultural transition, and spouses rarely grieve on the same schedule. One partner may be ready to look forward while the other is still saying goodbye. When those timelines collide, small things — a comment about the new church, a decision about where to live — can spark tension that feels far bigger than it should.

“You didn't drift apart. You're simply grieving on two different clocks — and that's survivable.”

The way through is not to hurry each other along. It's to name the gap out loud. Ask your spouse where they actually are today, not where you assume they should be. Protect a few minutes each day to talk without fixing anything. Give the slower-adjusting partner permission to mourn, and give the faster-adjusting one permission to hope.

Re-entry is a season you cross together — at different speeds, holding hands anyway. Many couples find that once they stop expecting to match each other, the pressure eases and they can finally meet where they actually are. And when the gap feels too wide to cross alone, a counselor or a community that understands ministry re-entry can help you find your footing again.

You don't have to figure out this transition by yourselves.

Return Again exists to walk with couples through the long work of coming home. Find encouragement and support at www.returnagain.org.
