When Coming Home Shakes Your Faith

#Faith & Doubt, #Spiritual Care, #Re-entry

On the field, faith felt close. There was prayer with urgency, the sense of God working in real time, and a daily dependence that made Him feel near. Then comes home — and somewhere between the airport and the third week of errands, the connection goes quiet. Prayer feels flat. Church feels routine. And many returning workers begin to wonder whether something is wrong with their faith.

If that sounds familiar, take a breath. It is not backsliding, and it is not unusual. Many returning ministry workers experience a season of spiritual dryness after the field. The intensity that defined an overseas walk doesn't transfer neatly to a quieter life of commutes and grocery runs. Add the guilt some feel about returning to comfort and abundance, and prayer can start to feel complicated instead of comforting.

"Spiritual dryness is not a sign that God has left. It is often the place where faith learns to walk without the adrenaline."

The way back is gentler than it might seem. Be honest in prayer — God is not waiting with a guilt trip but inviting His people back with grace, even when all there is to say is, "I feel far from You." Return to small, steady rhythms in Scripture rather than forcing the old intensity. And don't go it alone; find one trusted person or group where faith can be spoken about without performance. Spiritual seasons rise and fall for every believer. This trough is not the end of the story — it is a bend in a long road.

Your faith can find solid ground again — and you don't have to walk it alone.

Return Again offers spiritual care and community for workers navigating the quiet season of coming home. Find resources and community at www.returnagain.org.
