They love you, but they don't get it

Your family was thrilled to have you back. They hugged you at the airport, cooked your favorite meal, and asked how the trip was. And somewhere in the warm blur of homecoming, you realized something lonely: the people who love you most don't really understand where you've been.

This is one of the most common and confusing parts of coming home. It isn't that your family doesn't care — it's that they can't fully picture years of a life they never saw. The gap can leave you feeling like a stranger among the people who know you best, grieving a connection that used to feel effortless. Both things can be true at once: they love you deeply, and they don't get it.

The people who love you can learn to understand you — give it time.

Bridge the gap slowly. Share small, specific moments instead of expecting anyone to grasp the whole picture at once. Invite them into your world through photos, food, or a story at dinner. Find at least one person — a fellow returnee or member-care worker — who does understand, so your family doesn't have to carry what they can't. And give them grace; understanding grows with time and patience.
