The Two-Minute Answer to a Two-Year Story

#Telling Your Story, #Communication, #Ministry Re-entry

"So how was it?" It is the most common question a returning ministry worker hears, and one of the hardest to answer. Behind it sits years of life — people loved, prayers still prayed, victories, losses, the view from a kitchen window halfway around the world. And the person asking, kindly, is usually hoping for about two minutes.

That gap is one of the quiet frustrations of coming home. What was an entire life overseas can feel reduced to a polite anecdote. Some returning workers stop sharing altogether after a few short conversations, concluding that nobody really wants the real story. One returned worker put it bluntly: "Nobody knew the real story. Nobody cared." The ache underneath is not pride. It is the longing to be known.

"What was an entire life overseas can feel reduced to a polite anecdote. The ache underneath isn't pride — it's the longing to be known."

It helps to plan ahead for the question rather than be caught off guard by it. Prepare a warm two-minute version for casual askers, and save the deeper story for the few who lean in and ask a second question. Both kinds of conversation are valid. Not everyone can hold the whole story, and that is not rejection — it is simply the limit of a hallway conversation.

Most importantly, find the people and places built to receive the longer version: a debrief, a re-entry group, a trusted friend who will sit with the unedited account. Your story deserves more than a two-minute box, and there are people ready to hear all of it.

You shouldn't have to compress years of your life into a hallway answer, and you don't have to.

There are people and spaces built to hear the whole story, not just the two-minute version. Find community at returnagain.org.
