The one-year mark hit harder than you expected

#Re-entry Stages • #Encouragement#Emotional Health — Return Again Inc.

You made it a whole year. You expected to feel settled by now — maybe even proud. Instead, somewhere around the twelve-month mark, a wave of sadness or restlessness rolled in and caught you completely off guard. Wasn't this supposed to be getting easier?

Anniversaries have a quiet power. The one-year mark can stir up everything: the memory of the goodbye, the ache of how much has changed, the surprise that you're still adjusting long after everyone assumed you were fine. This isn't backsliding, and it isn't failure. Re-entry rarely moves in a straight line, and the second year can carry its own hidden grief — often with less support, because the world has moved on.

“Struggling a year later doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you're doing something hard, and the hard parts don't keep a tidy schedule.”

You're not behind. You're still becoming — and that's allowed.

Mark the milestone with honesty instead of pressure. Look back and name what you've actually navigated — it's more than you think. Give yourself the same compassion you'd give a friend. Reach back out to the people and resources that helped early on, even if it feels late to ask. Healing that takes longer than expected is still healing.

At Return Again, we walk with returning ministry workers for the long haul, not just the first few weeks. Find support for your journey at https://www.returnagain.org/.
